Camping and Hiking With Children

When you are camping or hiking with children, a great time can be had by all. But whatever the choice, allowances will need to be made to ensure for a successful and fun outing. When tenting, it is advisable to keep the smaller ones in the same tent with you. Between you is even better. The older ones will enjoy the independence of sleeping in their own tent. Give them a flashlight for those exciting excursions to the bathroom.

A sleeping bag that is the right size for its occupant is important. If the sleeping bag is too large and the weather turns cool, it will be difficult to stay warm in it. You can always add a blanket if one is available or fold over the sleeping bag for added warmth.

If you can, bring lots of changes of clothing for the kids, your life will be easier. Face it, you'll be in the outdoors and they will get dirty. It was once said about young people, that a dirty face is a happy face. As a precaution against rainy weather, you might want to consider bringing along water proof clothing. If this happens, board games and other activities that can entertain everyone out of the weather will also be a good idea.

Safety

When you arrive at camp, the boundaries need to be set. If they are younger, they will then have to stay closer to camp. A good rule of thumb is to always have the younger children within eyesight and older ones within hearing distance.

A whistle hung around everyone's neck can be an excellent safety precaution in the event that someone becomes lost or separated from the group. If this happens, the rule is to stay where you are and blow on the whistle for help. An adult can blow on a whistle back to them to assure them that help is on the way. Hiking or Camping. It doesn’t matter. With proper planning and flexibility, there will be happy memories for all.

Note: Although these ideas are for your consideration whether you are camping or hiking, there are special considerations you should be aware of when hiking. See the article below on Hiking With Children.
