Cooking Over An Open Fire
Most of us enjoy sitting around a fire at the end of a day of camping or hiking. Whether your campfire will be used for cooking or pleasure, there are some important things you should remember. Most public campgrounds will have locations such as pits for containing your campfire. Use them. If you are hiking, make sure to select a sheltered area away from the wind. A sudden breeze can send your flames out of control very quickly. So don't leave your site unattended. There should be no tree limbs above and make sure that you are away from any bushes. Make sure that you extinguish flames completely before you leave them.
Handy Hint
We can probably all relate to getting down on our hands and knees and blowing on kindling to help get a campfire going. Here's a trick that is sure to make things a whole lot easier. The next time you go camping or hiking, bring along a short length of hose. When your just started flame needs that extra oxygen to grow, blow through that hose from a more comfortable distance from the flames.
Don't forget. Do not inhale or breath in through the hose!
Happy camping and hiking.
