Forest Fires

Many forest fires can be prevented. In many cases they have been started by people that have been careless.

Never leave a campfire unattended. Make sure it is fully extinguished when you are done with it. Always have water on hand or some other means to extinguish it. Be aware of any bans that may be in effect. Forget roasting marshmallows on a windy day. When using your portable stove, always exercise caution as well.

If you need to smoke, make sure not to carelessly throw your finished cigarettes away. Be sure they are out before moving on.

Always be on the lookout for smoke and ash. These are signs of a nearby blaze. Remember, the flames can move quickly. You may want to seek an area that has already been burned.

If you need to go through any flames; be sure to cover your face and mouth, preferably with a wet cloth. And move quickly. If your clothes catch, drop and roll or put them out by some other method.

Keep in mind that flames will move in the same direction as the wind. They will also move more quickly uphill and more slowly downhill. Look for natural breaks such as water or larger open areas.

Stay calm and use your own best judgement, based on the conditions you find yourself in. When it is safe to do so, notify the authorities.

Happy Trails and lets be safe out there!
