Lightning Safety Tips

You should be aware of these lightning safety tips when hiking or camping. Your safety could depend on it.

If you hear thunder, make sure you take the following precautions. The sound of thunder may be your only advanced warning of impending danger. If possible, stay away from open areas and higher ground.

If you are hiking in a group, spread apart from each other. Hiking poles and other objects that are made of metal should be placed away from you. Crouch down on the balls of your feet. If you find this difficult, you may sit on your backpack with your feet on the ground. Take out metal objects and set them aside. Shut your eyes and cover your ears for added protection.

Don’t resume your hike for at least 30 minutes after the electrical storm has subsided. Remember, a strike can still occur from miles or kilometers away.

Be aware that if someone has been hit, they will not carry an electric charge. You may administer first aid. Get medical help for them as soon as possible.

The chances of getting struck are slim, but you can decrease your chances of being hit even more by following these safety precautions.

Lets be safe out there.
