What To Do If Lost In the Wilderness

If you’re lost in the wilderness, don’t panic. With some planning and knowledge, you will know what to do if this ever happens.

Before you begin a hike, make sure that people know where you will be and when you will be returning. And stick to your plans. Don’t decide to go off in a different direction exploring after you have started. A note with your itinerary left on your car is also a good idea. When your hike is over, be courteous and let these people know that you have returned.

Plan to travel in a group and stay with the group. Don’t ever wonder off alone.

If in the event that you do get separated from your group; as mentioned, don’t panic. Don’t leave the area you find yourself in. This will only make it more difficult for others to find you.

Everyone in your group should wear bright, easy to see clothing. This will help make you easier to spot if people are looking for you. If you can, start a fire for the same reason. This can also make it easier to find you and will help keep you warm.

In our article about children, we spoke of using whistles. Everyone should have one. They can be heard from great distances. Blow on them to let people know you need help and to identify your location.

Remember, if you do get off course , don’t panic. Stay where you are and make yourself as obvious and visible as possible. Help will be on it’s way and you will survive to hike another day.
