Types of Hiking and Camping
Types of hiking and camping come in many different forms. When you are camping; some activities you can take part in are fishing, swimming, canoeing, enjoying nature and bird watching. Besides enjoyment and relaxation, hiking or camping are great ways to get exercise that also has many benefits.
Day Hiking
Day camping is a popular activity. The objective is to get out and enjoy the trails and return to your camp before nightfall. Make sure that everyone has proper footwear. When purchasing your shoes, don’t buy based solely (pardon the pun) on how good they look on your feet. Come prepared for a possible change in the weather and be sure you know how to get back to camp.
Backpacking
Backpacking is probably the most rewarding typing of hiking because you will be going further into the backcountry. Unlike day hiking, you will not be returning to your base camp at the end of the day. You will be taking what you need in your backpack for an overnight stay. The longer your hike, the more supplies you will need to take along. Be careful when planning what to take. Taking too much (making your backpack too heavy) or having the wrong types of supplies will detract from having a successful experience in the backcountry. On the other hand, taking too little or the wrong types of supplies can result in a dangerous experience also.
Tent Camping
This camping often attracts families with children. This is also a great way to experience the outdoors in a rugged and natural way. If you like this approach to being in the outdoors, then all you really need is a vehicle to transport everyone and their supplies to an established campground with facilites (or not) and enjoy. For those concerned about money, it is less expensive than RV camping.
RV Camping
RV camping offers the comforts of home while you are camping. You can travel when you want and the weather is less likely to send you packing and heading home if it gets bad. Your RV can be your basecamp for day and backcamp hiking
RV stands for Recreational Vehicle. An RV usually comes equipped with many conveniences. Most will have at least beds, toilet, shower, stove, fridge, heater and electrical power. Some even have generators so will not need to be plugged in. One added benefit is that you can pick up and go much more quickly because they are always packed and “ready to go”. You can enjoy the "niceties" of home in the most remote campsite.
The downside to RV camping is that an RV is expensive. Buying second hand or going to a tent trailer is a cheaper alternative. RV’s can be rented if you want see if this type of camping is for you before making a large financial commitment. one last thing to consider about RVing is that a smaller one because of it's size can access some areas that larger ones wouldn't be able to. Some things to keep in mind.
Whatever type of hiking or camping you decide is right for you, enjoying the outdoors is always a great experience that you can look forward to year after year.
Happy trails and camping.
