Weather

We all know that weather forecasts are not always accurate. Here are some things you might want to keep in mind when planning your next hiking or camping trip.

The more advanced the information, the more likely it may be wrong. If you live in an urban area and are planning a trip to the mountains, this may also be reason to question the forecasts. Will the information apply to where you are going? If the forecast is for the area where you live and you are planning to drive to the mountains, remember differences in elevations cause different conditions. The climate in the mountains could be very different than back at home.

We all know that weather can change throughout the day. If you call off a trip to your favorite hiking destination because of clouds or light rain in the morning, you might miss out on a great afternoon of hiking. The climate might change for the better by the time you get to your destination. The opposite of course could also be true.

Unless they the forecast is for both cool and rain, you might not have too much to worry about. Some of the best hikes can be had in both pleasant temperatures and rain. Always be careful about footing. Hard and rocky surfaces can become slippery when wet. If it rains long enough, you will also have mud to contend with.

My best advice is that you come prepared for different types of conditions. Dress in layers so you can accommodate different temperatures, both warmer and cooler. And don’t forget waterproof clothing or rain gear for when you do encounter a bit of precipitation.

If you don’t a little rain spoil your plans and come prepared, you will be able to get in more hikes or do more camping during the season.
